Mrs EndlessToDoList has been wanting some of those stringed twinkle lights over the deck. It wasn’t on the “official” to-do list, but when she found them at Costco last week, this one jumped to the top of the list.

I planned to set a post in concrete inside a plastic planter pot. This was good and heavy. I even added decorative river rock on top to hide the concrete. From the post I ran a steel cable to a tree at the other end of the deck. I then zig zagged the lights between the house and the cable.
The lights proved to be too heavy for the tall post and it was tipping with the very first zag. I cut the post near the top of the cement and anchored it to a railing post using 3 large bolts. This worked much better though the post does seem to be strained quite a bit. I’ll likely reinforce it with a long strip of plate steel or angle iron.

I used eyelets attached at the house, the post and the tree.

The final product came out pretty good, in my opinion. Mrs EndlessToDoList had a different way of stringing them in mind….we’ll see how long my zig zags last. The real test will be this evening with a drink in our hands and our feet up.

Hold my beer! I can zip line down that cable. Haaaa!
Cool! And you have a fire pit. I’ve got to get over there soon!
