Why I did the weeding and mulch myself

  • Weekend project with big impact
  • Cost

Would I do it again? Sure, but not this season!

We have a couple large beds in the front yard, they’re not really flower beds, because we don’t have any flowers in them….so I guess that makes it just a bed? Anyway, it’s been overrun the last few years with Mares Tail, this is an invasive, nasty weed. We’ve pulled them, dug them up, sprayed them and they keep coming back. I read that pelletized lime is supposed to change the acidity of the soil and help get rid of them. I found some and spread it, waited a couple weeks and……nothing, didn’t seem to affect the weeds in the least.

Mares Tail has taken over!

We started by pulling all of the rocks out, this made cleaning up the beds much easier and we laid down “commercial grade” landscaping fabric. A gift from a friend cleaning out his garage. Right about the time the rocks were back in place, the truck with our mulch arrived. 6 yards worth. That nearly made it all the way around the house. Could probably have used 8-10.

Pulling weeds and playing in the dirt didn’t give much opportunity to take a bunch of during photos. But the end result is drastic.

The driveway weeds lived to die another day!

And another one checked off the list….next!

An update to this project. These pain in my butt weeds have returned, though not with the furry they once had. In the late summer I’ve been pulling them as they pop up. I was surprised to find they don’t appear to be rooted down to the soil, just in the mulch. This has me baffled as to where they’re coming from…any one with ideas? I’m all ears.
